The objective of the project was to develop an anaerobic membrane bioreactor (AnMBR) process successful in treating landfill leachate and removing xenobiotic organic contaminants present at trace concentrations. Our model contaminant was 17β-estradiol (E2), a prevalent female hormone. During the second year and subsequent year of the project, we made significant progress in starting up and operating the anaerobic MBR. We also conducted sorption assays towards the construction of a phase distribution model for the model compounds in a bioreactor system.
