I graduated with a B.Tech (Hons.) in Civil Engineering from IIT Kharagpur, India in 1997. Following a 4-year stint in a consulting practice (at Engineers India Limited (EIL) New Delhi) as a Civil Engineer, I joined the University of Florida’s Environmental Engineering Sciences PhD program under the guidance of Prof Tim Townsend. I was heavily involved in many different research projects related to solid and hazardous waste management during my stay at University of Florida. The majority of the projects I was involved with was funded through the Hinkley Center for Solid and Hazardous Waste Management. My PhD research focus was on treated wood and its environmental impacts. I graduated with my PhD in 2005 and continued my work in the UF Solid Waste research group as a post doctoral fellow. I consider myself very lucky to have worked with top level researchers in the world such as Prof Tim Townsend and Prof Helena Solo-Gabriele. I learnt a lot both academically and professionally through the association I have with these two great researchers. All this was made possible through the research support we received from the Hinkley Center. During my PhD program, I was awarded an outstanding international student award in 2004 and to date have published approximately 25 refereed publications. My research contributions on the environmental impacts of treated wood helped shape national policy in US on this subject.
What I’m Doing Now
After spending nearly 7 years in Florida, I moved to New Zealand in May 2008 to take up a faculty position in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Auckland. I am presently engaged in teaching and doing research in Environmental Engineering. My main research interests include: Environmental Risk Assessment, Environmental Nanotechnology, Impact of Water Chemistry on Bio-availability and Aquatic Toxicity of Contaminants, Environmental Technologies for Sustainability, Energy and Environment, Global Warming and Climate Change, Solid and Hazardous Waste Management, and Life Cycle Analysis.
