What I’m Doing Now

In working towards my doctoral degree at University of Florida, I am conducting research to explore some of the key issues of bioreactor landfill design and operation. This project is funded by Florida Department of Environmental Protection and managed by Florida Center for Solid and Hazardous Waste Management; details of this project can be found at www.bioreactor.org. The focus of my current research is to develop guidelines for design and operation of moisture and air injection system, which is operationally similar to groundwater recharge well system and bioventing system. These guidelines could also be used by in-situ remediation system for contaminated soil in vadose zone. In addition to the field investigation, I am modeling the transient fluid flow in unsaturated porous media. This model will provide a new method for quicker characterization of properties of soil in the vadose zone. The other research project funded by FDEP and FCSHWM that I worked focused on management issues of drinking water sludge, street sweepings, catch basins, pond sediments and soils reclaimed from mining of municipal solid waste landfills. I presented research on bioreactor at two international waste conferences (19th International Conference on Solid Waste Technology and Management, Philadelphia, PA, and Third Intercontinental Landfill Research Symposium, Lake Toya, Hokkaido, Japan, in year 2004.
